Saturday Morning Market
Harkerville, Plettenberg Bay’s farmers come together with their wares.
Saturday morning markets – between Plettenberg Bay and George there are three fresh farm produce and craft markets that are well worth a visit. Here’s the first of the trio: Harkerville Saturday Village Market open 8 – 12
15kms from Plett on the N2 towards Knysna, the Harkerville Saturday Village Market has operated every Saturday morning for the last 13 years – only once during this time has it had to be cancelled due to heavy rain.
Each Saturday, come rain or shine, the stallholders faithfully set up their stalls ready to trade, meet with old friends and make new ones. The atmosphere is homely, friendly and vibrant as people, young and old, from near and far, mingle to enjoy the fresh air and whatever on offer that takes their fancy – breakfast (wow! 147306 eggs in 9 years), morning tea and cake, freshly baked breads and croissants, pancakes to name but a few.
Then there’s all the other produce to stock up on – jams, preserves, nuts, honey, waffles, different flavours of fudge, frozen yoghurt, cheese, free-range chickens ……..
Our furry friends also love a morning’s outing – “Woof! Woof! ooh there’s a little one that I’d like to get to know! Much more interesting and rewarding than posing for a photo – children, that’s what I’ve love about the market. Hmm the cuteness of them! Mom, when are the little ones coming to visit again?” Woof! Woof!
I liked the idea of honey “on tap”. Bring your own bottle, get fresh, raw honey and help the environment by not buying another bottle. I’ll definitely be back next week – honey, lemon juice & water to start the day, yes I like that idea!
Now that you’ve got your basket filled with goodies to take home for the family it’s time to move over to the crafters’ section where you’ll find something for all ages.
Little girls just love the beautiful wedding and evening dresses suitable for Barbie’s best celebration, both boys and girls love the sand art and the climbing frames and swings are forever a hit. There are lots of little craft items luring the children to spend their pocket money.
Gosh! Do the kids of today work for their pocket money or just get handouts from mom and dad.
The cooler months are a good time to plant a veggie garden or add some plants to your landscaping. Both types of plants are available here.
One of my favourite stalls is the beautiful quilts made right here in Plett; such an array and even cloth books for children. This is a stall where you must stop and browse. Advent calendars are already on offer – December is fast-approaching
